Community-based learning is a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience that allows students to
(a) participate in an organized activity that meets identified community needs and
(b) reflect on the activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
Community-based learning provides a way that DKU gives back to the local community.
While not revenue generating, community-based learning does forge connections to the local community, result in long-term research collaborations, student internship opportunities and Signature Work projects.
Community-based learning is also an encouraged addition to courses to increase civic engagement and problem solving skills benefitting the local community. Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of community-based learning.
Application
The Office of Undergraduate Studies provides funding opportunity for faculty to support community-based learning (CBL) initiatives for courses taught at DKU. Faculty who may be interested in adding a community-based learning component to an existing or new UG course should contact Jiawen Cai at jiawen.cai@dukekunshan.edu.cn for more information.
